Vietnam Air buys Boeing 737 max jets for $7.8 billion

On Monday, the White House confirmed the $7.8 billion value of Vietnam Airlines' agreement to purchase 50 Boeing 737 Max planes.

Reuters reported the amount of the purchase on Sunday, citing a source, and this announcement verifies that number. Previously, Reuters also claimed that Boeing intended to sell the planes to Vietnam Air.

Reuters' inquiries for comment from Boeing and Vietnam Airlines were not met with an instant response. The White House made the announcement of the partnership between the two firms on Sunday.

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Vietnam will service 150 million air transport passengers by 2035; this makes the country the fifth fastest-growing aviation market in the world in 2022, when COVID-19 travel restrictions were repealed.

VietJet, a competitor of Vietnam Airlines, has a contract with Boeing to purchase 200 737 MAX aircraft.
